Kitimat Arena
Kitimat, BC / August 2015
The Challenge
We started upgrading the 2500 seat arena in Kitimat, BC in 2006. The original system was installed in 1980 was on its last legs, and needed replacement.
In 2006, we required a new amplifier rack to replace the existing 400 watts of power that was fed to a center cluster of Altec Lansing speakers.
In 2008 we were asked to return to upgrade the one set of speakers aimed at one end zone, as a speaker had failed prior to 2005, and was never returned to the site by another sound company.
In spring 2011, we received a tender to quote on replacing the existing speaker cluster.
The Solution
In 2006, we installed a new amplifier rack to replace the existing 400 watts of power that was fed to a center cluster of Altec Lansing speakers. We installed new preamplifiers, a new digital signal processor (DSP) that provided equalization, crossover and volume limiting to prevent speaker damage if the system is turned up too loud. We installed two new Crest amplifiers to power the Altec Lansing speaker cluster.
In 2008 we returned to upgrade the one set of speakers aimed at one end zone, as a speaker had failed prior to 2005, and was never returned to the site by another sound company. We installed one additional Crest amplifier along with two weatherproof Community R1 coaxial speakers to provide better coverage for that end zone. The speakers were replaced with the intention to complete replacement of the Altec speaker cluster at a later date with similar Community speakers.
In spring 2011, we received a tender to quote on replacing the existing speaker cluster. We recommended that we add a total of 16 delay speakers over the seating area, as a number of the seats were blocked from direct sound coverage by the boards around the rink.
We reused the two Community R1 speakers installed in 2008, added two additional R1 speakers for the other end zone, and complemented the four R1 speakers with two additional R.5 speakers to cover center ice. Upon removing the old Altec horns, we found the 1980 vintage woofers to be in very good condition, and gave the arena the option of leaving the woofers in place, giving additional bass response during large events in the arena. The arena decided to leave these woofers in place
